Flat round fluffy biscuits cut open and filled with ham and cheese slices, or sometimes butter!
Taco vendors
There are located at almost every corner offering corn or flour tortillas, with shredded chicken, onions, cabbage and cilantro
Seafood
There is a huge variety of seafood, and don’t miss out on the Fish Patties. Keep in mind Lobster season closes Feb 15 - June 15
Meat & Poultry
A lot of items are stewed, chicken, beef and pork. Game meats are popular, such as deer, Hicatee, iguana or gibnut.
Meat pies
You will find them warm and tucked away in vendors baskets or most restaurants
Beans-and-rice
Not the same as rice and beans, apart of the National Dish When ordering “beans-and-rice” is are separate and cooked in their own gravy and then put over white rice.
Common Desserts
Lemon (meringue) pie, milk (caramel cake) and chocolate cake or a Caribbean staple such as bread pudding, sweet potato pound or cassava cake
Side Dishes
Are generally potato salad made from real Heinz salad dressing, the key ingredient that makes Belizean potato salad Belijun, or coleslaw
Rice & Beans with Fish Stew Ingredients needed:
- 1/2 Lb red beans
- 1 can coconut milk
- 1/2 onion chopped
- 1 tsp black pepper& 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 sweet pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 lb rice
Stew Fish Preparation:
- 1 green pepper chopped
- 1 red sweet pepper chopped
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 2 fresh lemons or 1/2 cup vinegar
- 1 onion chopped
- 1 tsp seasoning salt
- 2 1/2 cups water
- 1 tsp thyme
- 1 can crushed tomato paste
Instructions:
- Boil the beans until soft
- Add coconut milk, onion, black pepper, salt, sweet pepper, garlic powder and rice
- Cook covered for approximately rice is ready
- Prepare your stew fish separately
- Wash the fish with vinegar and or lemon juice
- Place fish in a pot, add water, seasoning salt, onion, black pepper, green and sweet pepper
- Cover and steam fish for approximately 20 min
- Add tomato paste and simmer for 10 min
- Spoon over rice and enjoy
