St. Georges
St. George's was founded in the early 1700's by the French. The architecture today still has a French flavor – intriguing pastel, red roofed homes are set in a natural harbour. Everything from tiny fishing boats to classy yachts and enormous cruise ships tie up in Carenage, the inner harbor and center of marine activity. The House of Parliament, St. George's Roman Catholic Cathedral's gothic tower, the Esplanade, Sendall Tunnel, Fort George and Fort Frederick are all good subjects for photos. The vibrant market square with it's colorful people, exotic fruit and vegetables, spices and crafts and general going on's is also a great location for photo buffs to spend a few hours, not to mention the Bay Gardens 3,000 species and Botanical Garden's indigenous plants and flowers. Carib's Leap has a fabulous view, the scenic drive along the coast to Gouyave is not to be missed. And then there's the heavenly fragrances of the Dougaldston Spice Estate and the River Antoine Rum Distillery. Natural sites on the island include Mt. Carmel Waterfall, petroglyphs at Mt. Rich Amerindian Remains and River Sallee Boiling Springs. There's several good restaurants in St. George and plenty of reggae to lime to – so get up and jump!
