Respectful Tourism

Respectful Tourism

Always keep in mind: It's often the small things that make the difference.

Many people would like to travel with care for the environment and the people they visit, but do not know where to begin. How can you travel responsibly, without spoiling your holiday mood? What actions can your business take to support local communities and environmental surroundings?

To answer these important questions, and more, Earth.org has gathered some simple tips to help you discover the joy of responsible travel. If everyone can follow these travel tips, our actions will add up to change in the world.

Become part of a responsible traveller community!

RastaSoccerPack old clothing. I often pack clothes that I will be discarding in the near future, wear them once on the trip and throw them away. This leaves me more suitcase room for the return trip. Shawn Mylar, Huntington, W. Va.

Heres some food for thought before you leave:

For Travellers

Support the local economy

  • Contact responsible travel organizations
  • Buy from local merchants, not global franchises
  • Buy local products and avoid imported ones
  • Visit hotels, restaurants, and leisure facilities run by locals
  • Be active in the local community and support neighborhood projects during your stay

Protect and enjoy natural resources

  • Make environmentally friendly transport choices - use public transport wherever possible
  • Limit air transport and avoid it entirely for short distances
  • Compensate your CO2
  • Conserve water and electricity
  • Limit your trash and use recycled/recyclable products

Support and promote local culture and traditions

  • Be open-minded: seek to learn rather than impose your expectations
  • Respect differences between cultures
  • Observe the local people and adapt your behavior and clothing to their standards

For Businesses

  • Avoid waste: conserve water, energy and paper
  • Develop partnerships with responsible organizations
  • Hire local people for your company
  • Use local products and services for your business
  • Create and implement a written charter mandating respect for the environment and the local community
